Our back coating compounds are provided by acknowledged market leaders
in the development of environmentally friendly, fire safety and stain
resistant compounds.
Our two, high speed, high volume production lines can process up to
30,000 meteres of fabric per day. They have been developed to offer
us the flexibility we require to coat long or short runs of fabric
with the minimum of changeover periods.
We are known for providing the softest coatings in our market (average
weight gain of 20%) with a light breathable finish that avoids the
'whoppy cushion' effect.
Upholstered Furniture for the UK market must comply with stringent
British Standards, these are commonly known as the Cigarette and Match
test, which also comprises of the water soak procedure. The BS references
are B.S 5852 Parts 0&1 (Cigarette and Match). B.S5651 (WATERSOAK).
There are a several options available to the designer/customer when
considering how to upholster furniture with a complying fabric.
1 Fr Semi clear Backcoated fabric: This method is by far the
most common option, the Fr compound is applied after the fabric is
finished by the weaver/printer/dyer. Fr backcoating works by producing
oxygen-starving gases, this effectively extinguishes any flaming.
Typical add on levels vary from fabric to fabric, construction and
composition are the governing factors. This method has very few limitations.
The advantages are:
The fabrics appearance is not adversely affected by the
coating
All the physical properties are either improved or maintained.
The handle of the fabric is rarely adversely affected.
There are very few fabrics that cannot be back coated.
2 Clear Finishes: These include treatments such as a Phosphorus
based Formaldehyde resins. These are only effective on fabrics with
a high natural fibre content, this type of finish has the benefit
of being permanent but in many cases weakens the fabrics tear strength
considerably. And can effect the colour shade. Some of the lesser
finishers use a clear finish that is also polymer/ Phosphate based;
this type of compound is almost invisible when applied. The main disadvantage
the Fr performance is very unreliable.
3 Inherent fabrics: This type of fabric has the inclusion of
a modified acrylic yarn. These have the benefit of being permanently
flame retardant but the designs and colours are limited.
4 Interliner: When using a fabric that is at least 75% natural
fibre there is the option of using a schedule 3 Interliner (Barrier
Cloth). The only disadvantages are the extra cost of double upholstery
and the cost of the Interliner.
The finish that Flametect Fabrics uses is Fr Semi clear backcoating.
Which is the most reliable, cost effective and proven method that
current science allows. We are constantly working with our chemists
to produce more efficient compounds.
